Through the experience of loosing Michael and Adam, we have noticed some circumstances that may be indications of a pregnancy at risk.  We are not Doctors, often the items listed below may occur as a normal pregnancy event.  Every pregnancy is different as is every mother.  We only offer these as events we have observed in pregnancies (our family’s and others) which have had some level of complication.  Don’t panic if one or more of these circumstances occurs but do visit with your doctor ASAP to discuss what further actions should be taken.  Be persistent!

WE STRONGLY ENCOURAGE ALL FAMILIES TO TALK TO THEIR DOCTORS ABOUT AN ASPIRIN AND HEPARIN REGIMENT DURING PREGNANCY.  DO NOT UNDERTAKE THESE MEDICATIONS WITHOUT YOUR DOCTORS CONSENT.  IT APPEARS THAT BLOOD CLOTTING MAY PLAY A LARGER ROLE THAN PREVIOUSLY KNOWN IN THE LOSS OF CHILDREN.  OFTEN THESE CLOTS COULD CAUSE SIMPLE PROBLEMS TO BECOME SERIOUS PROBLEMS SUCH AS KNOTS IN THE CORD OR THIN CORDS.  TALK TO YOUR DOCTOR ABOUT THE RISK OF TRISOMY 2 MOSAICISM.  THIS IS A CHROMOSOMAL ABNORMALITY THAT CAN CAUSE CLOTTING!  THIS IS A HEREDITARY ISSUE AND IF YOU TEST POSITIVE CARE AND GUIDANCE SHOULD BE GIVE TO ALL FEMALE OFF SPRING AS TO MAKE SURE THEY ARE TESTED AND TAKE CARE DURING THEIR PREGNANCIES.  WE DO NOT KNOW IF THIS ISSUE CAN SKIP GENERATIONS SO CARE SHOULD BE GIVEN AT ALL AGES.

Ask about Lovenox in lieu of Heparin.  It only requires one shot per day, has fewer side effects and is considered to be more effective.

Blood Clotting

Recent advanced Chromosome tests can show a risk of blood clotting that may not be detectable in more common blood tests.  There is a theory that blood clotting may be occurring in the babies that results in the loss of that child or other health risks.  It is believed that when otherwise normal healthy babies pass away with no obvious cause that blood clotting is a possible factor.  Even if “a cord accident” is listed as the cause.  The Chromosome test we have worked with shows risk factors that traditional blood tests will not show.

If such a factor is discovered, the use of baby aspirin and heparin/lovenox during pregnancy is an often recommended treatment.  As birth control pills can create blood clotting, it may be advisable to discontinue their use (after pregnancy – you should never take birth controls while pregnant).  The Chromosome that leads to this blood clot risk can be passed on to healthy children.  If you test positive, you may wish to consider having your children tested so that preventive care can be given.

Please remember we are not doctors and you should always have a thorough consult with appropriate medical professionals about your family’s history and circumstances.  However, the blood clotting helps explain why otherwise healthy babies are not surviving.

Even if you do not have a clotting risk, the aspirin/heparin/lovenox regiment can offer benefits.  Talk to your doctor!

If any of these items are similar to experiences you had during a pregnancy which a loss or less than healthy baby was born, we would like to know.  Call us 817-748-2669 or email at;

If any of these items lead you to take action which results in a at risk baby being born safely, we would like to know.

A change in the baby’s movements

A baby that does not respond or move as it was earlier in the pregnancy may require closer attention, fetal monitoring and more detailed ultrasounds.  Ask about weekly tests that can allow greater detail on a baby’s progress.

A failure to steadily gain weight or size

If the mother’s weight gain has not steadily gone up or fails to match previous pregnancies, closer monitoring may be required.

A Thin Umbilical Cord

This is an item that has created great interest in our family.  We have witnessed a nonscientific correlation between losses or weak babies and thin umbilical cords.  In both our losses, the cords were thinner than other births and had anomalies that may have been compensated for by a thicker cord.  We are exploring how to begin debate and studies in the medical community to gain a larger sampling to see if this is an unknown risk factor.  If it is, this may be a causation of losses that have been classified as “unknown”.

Currently most doctors use the ultra sound device to count how many blood vessels are in the cord (there should be 3) but often they gain this information by looking that the cords attachment to the baby.  We believe that extreme care and frequent ultrasound (on new high resolution machines) should be used to take cross section measurements of the cord.  Special attention should be placed in the thickness of insulation the vessels have within the cord.  Cords should also be inspected from various & numerous angles for knots, exposed blood vessels and incorrect attachment to the placenta.

If your doctor or HMO is unwilling to perform these tests, you can always pay a third party medical professional and forward them to your doctor.  If financial resources are a factor, ask about payment plans.  Most doctors are willing to work with conscientious families in insuring the health of their baby.  We also believe that many doctors would be willing to work with you on items that may not be covered by insurance or require additional time on their part to insure a healthy baby.  Please Ask!  Remember you DON’T need a referral to visit a specialists if you are not seeking insurance reimbursement.

Bleeding, Cramps, Contractions

These are commonly known warning signs that require immediate attention.  If your doctor is not available, find one that is or go to an emergency room.  Don’t go to sleep hoping everything will be Ok in the morning.  Be persistent!  Bleeding is seldom if ever normal (even small spotting can be a warning sign)!

  Disturbing Dreams

We all know about a women’s intuition.  We have noticed that very disturbing dreams have occurred during pregnancies which a loss or a less than healthy baby has occurred.  The dream that comes to mind includes missing teeth or the loss of teeth.  This alone does not indicate a problem, but we believe you should visit with your doctor and use advanced monitoring techniques if such dreams occur.
